London Gay Symphony Orchestra celebrates twenty-one years with an Anniversary Concert at St John’s Smith Square featuring a new commission by celebrated composer Michael Finnissy.

Finnissy – Natural Behaviour
Stravinsky – Petrushka
Rachmaninov – Symphony No. 2

conductor – Christopher Braime

London Gay Symphony Orchestra was founded in May 1996 by conductor Robin Gordon-Powell and gave its first performance at London’s Drill Hall in October that year; over two decades later, LGSO still retains some of those original members. It is the oldest LGBT orchestra in the UK and one of only a handful in the world, gives five concerts every year at venues including Cadogan Hall and the Southbank Centre, has toured to cities including Paris, Zagreb, and Cologne, has performed with artists including Jimmy Somerville, Rosalind Plowright and Sue Perkins, was recently part of the BBC’s ‘Great Orchestra Challenge’, has recorded a score for the cult film Pervirella, and raised thousands for charities such as Amnesty and Albert Kennedy Trust. Patrons include Night Tsar Amy Lamé.

‘The orchestra shine with a sense of energy and flair that make them a joy to watch. The overpowering sound they create is nothing short of spectacular.’ So So Gay

London-born Michael Finnissy has been composer in residence at Sydney Mardi Gras and previous LGBT-themed work includes ‚Shameful Vice‘ (1994); on the 50th Anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality in the UK, LGSO are proud to present the world premiere of ‚Natural Behaviour‘ as part of the Pride Festival. In another first, the orchestra will tackle Stravinsky’s ‚Petrushka‘ – one of the most thrillingly ambitious pieces in the entire orchestral repertoire, but it will be the second time they’ve performed Rachmaninov’s ‚Second Symphony‘, which was chosen by players from their own repertoire as a suitably symphonic climax to twenty-one years.

Michael Finnissy was born in Tulse Hill in 1946 and studied at the Royal College of Music. He went on to create the music department of the London School of Contemporary Dance and in 1999 was made Professor of Composition at the University of Southampton. He has been featured composer at the Bath, Huddersfield and Almeida festivals; his work has been performed, recorded and broadcast across the world to great acclaim. http://www.michaelfinnissy.info

‚Finnissy is one of those awkward English visionaries like William Blake or John Bunyan, whose rough edges are a measure of their burning convictions.‘ The Telegraph

Christopher Braime studied conducting at the Royal College of Music and has been musical director of LGSO since 2011. He’s also MD of Putney Choral Society and Grosvenor Light Opera Company as well as guest conductor for Sussex Symphony Orchestra. christopherbraime.com

‘Christopher Braime’s restrained yet eloquent conducting brings out the best of this well-rehearsed orchestra.’ The Latest
